Free Letter Q Tracing Worksheets

q tracing worksheet

This is the simplest of our set, featuring very large bubble letters for children to trace inside. They can also have a go at the very large word – ‘queen’ – to further practice their hand-eye coordination. This version could also be used as a poster.

This version builds upon the previous one by adding some additional tracing practice for refining hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Students can trace around the queen to complete the picture, then of course color her in!

This version introduces sentence writing. By practicing the letter in the context of sentences, students can learn that letters form words, and words form sentences. To this end, I created a sentence with lots of ‘q’ letters in it: “The queen was quick at the quiz.”

This version focuses on practicing the capital and lowercase versions. This one was designed with large letters and simple tracing for pre-K students. If your child finds this easy, use our version further down that has smaller letters (requiring better fine motor skills) and horizontal handwriting lines.

This is our first option with horizontal handwriting practice lines, which are designed for students to develop uniformity in size and shape. I usually introduce these horizontal lines in Kindergarten, which helps children to gradually shrink their letter size and improve fine motor skills.

Tracing Letter Q

This version has built-in progression on the one sheet. Students start with an uppercase Q line, then a lowercase line, then two lines combining the two different cases of the smae letter. Finally, children can practice putting the letter into a simple word: queen.

This version involves drill and practice of the letter, in both its forms. The focus should be on uniformity of both shape and size. With consistent practice and reinforcement, students will lock the letter into their memory.

This version is all about using the letter Q in the context of full words (ideally identifying that q is followed by u). Students write the words queen, quick, and quiz – both with a lowercase and uppercase first letter.

This version is designed to help students take the step from tracing to individual practice. The horizontal handwriting lines are still there for scaffolding of sizing, with the idea that students develop the skill of maintaining uniform letter size in words and sentences, but they need to practice the letters independently.

This version focuses in on practicing one of the most common sight words starting with our focus letter. Students see a model of the word on the left on each line, and they need to try to replicate it on the right.
