In this simplest of versions, students trace the very large letters for u, in both uppercase and lowercase. They then try to write the word “unicorn”. Students can color the unicorn or try to draw their own once complete.

In this first piece, students can experience progression from individual letter practice, with a focus on the lead-in and out of the cursive u. Then, we move onto writing two words: up and umbrella.

This version requires students to practice the form of tracing the lowercase u, focusing on completing the full u shape and flicking the pen out toward the next letter.

To complement the lowercase u sheet, this one focuses on the uppercase version. I have presented horizontal tracing lines here so students understand that the uppercase version is tall.

This practice sheet for individual letters combines uppercase and lowercase versions of ‘Uu’ side-by-side to demonstrate mastery. Students write each version 36 times, developing reflexive cursive writing skills.

For the first of three pieces that practice full words, students work on the word “umbrella”, with a focus on connecting the lowercase u to the lowercase m.

Our second of three u words is “up”. Students practice the word 36 times across the page. focusing on fluency and not lifting the pen between the u and p when in lowercase style (first 3 lines).

The third and final practice word sheet provides a focus on the word “udder”, practiced 18 times, so students can develop experience and fluency in following the pen stroke without lifting the pen.

In this version, students get a chance to practice and show mastery of all three of their focus u-words: up, umbrella, and udder. Students write 22 words in total, all involving practice in writing u’s in cursive style.

Moving up a difficulty level, students are presented the task of practicing full sentences in this piece. With the help of horizontal guidelines, students write the short sentence “My uncle is under the umbrella” three times.

For our second full sentence, students are presented some challenging words with plenty of u’s. It reads: “The unique unicorn hid under the unwavering umbrella and sung songs to get around the rain.”
