Free Number 1 Tracing Worksheets

bubble number one

Difficulty: 🔥

This version is a simple bubble number coloring page, targeted at very young children. Children can color within the lines to get familiar with the shape or color their own patterns and images within the border of the number.

Surprisingly, this page is the most popular of the set. Targeted at Pre-K students, the purpose of this one is to get children to view and memorize the number. They need to be able to differentiate the number from surrounding numbers. To do this, children are asked to color only the balloons that contain the target number.

This version contains a very large bubble 1 which takes up nearly the whole page. It’s designed for very beginners, but has been used by readers as a poster on Pre-K and Kindergarten walls as well. If you use it as a worksheet, encourage the child to trace the lines in the order suggested by the arrows, then trace the word “One” at the bottom under the letter.

This version contains a large bubble 1 number with tracing guidelines inside it, encouraging children to follow the most efficient stroke structure for the letter. Then, children can trace the word with a capitalized ‘O’. The middle section has slightly smaller numbers, still in bubbles, for children to repeat the correct stroke process six times in a row. Lastly, to show they know and understand what the number means, children are asked to color just one of the five balloons.

This is the first version that uses horizontal handwriting lines to help scaffold writing. The purpose of these lines is to ensure uniformity of size across an entire writing line. In this version, students practice the number over and over, with the intention that this repetition helps build muscle memory and refinement of skill.

In this version, students practice the number across four lines, with each line containing the horizontal handwriting scaffold. I’ve also included the “color the balloons” exercise seen in the first worksheet on the list, which helps children to understand what the number means in reality.

In this version, children not only get practice in writing the number, but also the word. I’ve provided capitalized and lowercase versions for children to get sufficient practice of the word in both formats. You can also encourage your child to color the bubble number in the top-right corner once they have finished the tracing exercise.

This version focuses entirely on the spelling of the word rather than the numerical form. Children write the word in lowercase and capitalized forms across six lines, helping children to develop muscle memory, improve fine motor skills and penmanship, and memorize the spelling. You can also encourage the child to color the balloon at the top in their favorite color.

This is the next step up once your child has had practice with the simpler pieces earlier in the article. Here, we still have the horizontal guidelines, but the dot-tracing scaffold is removed. Children need to look at the model at the beginning of each line then try to replicate it across the line, maintaining form, size and structure throughout.

In this version, we practice spelling the word for our focus number, but this time without the dot-tracing guidelines. Children are provided the horizontal handwriting lines to scaffold uniformity of size, but they have to master the form of the words and recall the stroke order correctly. There is also a model word on the left of each line for children to refer to.
