This collection of free r-controlled vowels flashcards contains 5 sets of cards for 65 different words total. Each set covers a specific r-controlled vowel form from the following:
- ar: car, jar, star, smart, start, cart, dart, art, sharp, mark, bark, March, farm, arm, alarm, harp, shark, barn.
- er: fern, germ, perch, stern, serve, herd, person, perfect, butter, letter, winter, mother, father.
- ir: bird, girl, dirt, stir, first, shirt, third, thirst, skirt, squirt.
- or: corn, thorn, horn, storm, short, sport, torch, fork, door, floor, store, shore.
- ur: fur, burn, burst, hurt, purr, blur, nurse, Purse, surf, turf, hurdle, purple.
They’re all completely free, so feel free to grab all of them!
You can use these resources to help students both rote learn the words and practice the sounding-out of the r-controlled vowel sound in the context of common simple words.
All the flashcards are designed to be printed onto regular US Letterhead paper (the sort of paper you’d put into your at-home printer!). Make sure you select the “shrink to fit” option when printing to avoid any cut-offs on your print.
