Activity Ideas: How to Use these Flashcards
1. Memory Game
Select 25 cards with verbs that you want to focus on. Print two copies of the cards, so there are duplicate cards in the pack. Laminate the cards to ensure they are durable enough for this game.
You will end up with 50 cards total.
Lay the cards out in an array (e.g. 7 rows of 7 cards) with the cards facing downward.
To play the game, children will take turns to flip the cards over. In each turn, they can flip over two cards at a time. Then, they must turn the cards back to their original face-down position.
Over time, the children will come to learn where specific cards are among the set.
The goal is to remember where cards are so that when their partner card appears, they can flip two of the same card in the same turn.
When children find pairs, they can remove the pairs and hold them until the end of the game.
The game ends when all pairs have been found.
The winner is the person who has found the most pairs and therefore collected the most cards.
2. Act it Out!
Children take turns to pull a verb card and then act out that verb for the class. They cannot say the name of the verb, but the students in the class can yell out their guess of the verb being acted out.
The first child to call out the correct verb takes the next turn in picking out a card to be acted out.
3. Snap!
Print two to three packs of cards and laminate them.
Children get seven cards each. They keep their cards face-down in front of them. They then take turns to place their card face-up on the pile in the middle of the group.
If ever two cards are placed with the same verb, children try to ‘snap’ (place their hand over) the pile as fast as possible. The fastest student to snap the doubles gets to keep the whole pile! Keep playing until one child has the whole pack.
