💡What’s a Diphthong?
A diphthong is a sound formed by the combination of two vowel sounds within the same syllable. Instead of being a single, pure vowel sound, a diphthong starts as one vowel and glides into another. The vowels in the written word do not have to be side-by-side and can take different written forms while producing the same phonetic sound.
Each flashcard set below covers a specific diphthong from the following:
- /aɪ/ – time, ride, five, like, smile, night, high, kite, pie, right, white, light
- /aʊ/ – house, mouse, loud, down, cloud, found, round, brown, how, cow, now, town, proud, shout, crowd
- /ɔɪ/ – boy, toy, joy, coin, join, noise, oil, point, choice, boil, foil, soil, voice, annoy, employ
- /eɪ/ – day, way, play, stay, great, rain, name, cake, face, gate, play, lake, late, safe, same
- /oʊ/ – go, no, alone, home, rose, stone, nose, boat, coat, road, soap, note, hope, bone
- /ɪə/ – here, volunteer, fear, deer, clear, cheer, tear, year, near, atmosphere, pioneer
- /ʊə/ – tour, pure, cure, tourist, secure, manure, assure, lure, obscure, endure, procure
- /eə/ – share, care, chair, hair, pair, stair, wear, square, fair, dare, glare, air, bear, aware, prepare
All the flashcard sets are completely free, so feel free to grab all of them!

You can use these resources to help students both rote learn the words and practice the sounding-out of the diphthong sound in the context of common simple words.
All the flashcards are designed to be printed onto regular US Letterhead paper (the sort of paper you’d put into your at-home printer!). Make sure you select the “shrink to fit” option when printing to avoid any cut-offs on your print.
