Free Two Times Tables Worksheets

check mark Designed by

These two times tables worksheets are designed for students right at the beginning of their times tables journey. Students need to count by 2’s, then advance to creating groups of 2’s in their minds, and finally develop rote memories of the 2 times tables, in order to fully develop this skill and move onto more complex mathematical problems.

All the pieces below are designed to be printed onto A4 paper in portrait format. Make sure you select the “shrink to fit” option when printing to avoid any cut-offs on your print.

Two Times Tables Worksheets (Free Printables)

two times tables worksheet

Version 1: Simple

Difficulty: 🔥

This version is designed to be large, bold, and highly engaging for very beginners. The times tables are listed in order, so this piece functions as an advanced “skip counting by 2” style worksheet.

Version 2: Fill in the Blanks (Easy)

Difficulty: 🔥🔥

This version is a little more advanced, requiring students to fill-in-the-blanks. Students enter the missing addend to make the multiplication sentence complete. In this version, the problems are in order, which helps sustain the focus on rote memorization of the tables from 1-12, sequentially.

Version 3: Fill in the Blanks (Hard)

Difficulty: 🔥🔥🔥

This fill in the blanks version is a little more advanced as the questions are jumbled, requiring students to pay more attention and focus on memorizing each multiplication problem on its own, and not just as part of a sequence.

How to Teach Times Tables

Times tables is a topic that still needs to be memorized by rote learning. It is a basic skill required for most multiplication and algebra problems as students head into higher grades and more difficult problems.

As a result, we often teach students to learn times tables by presenting them with ample practice worksheets or drill-and-practice questions to help children to drill the problems into their mind’s eye.

To this end, I recommend using the above worksheets on a regular basis through a procedure known as spaced repetition. Weave these worksheets into a student’s regular homework regimen, such as once per week or once every two weeks, to ensure the answers to each problem are kept at the top of students’ minds over a prolonged time. This will teach the mind that times tables are important and should be committed to long-term memory.

Differentiation

Rote Learning Activities

Alongside worksheets, it might be useful to give students multiplication flashcards, which can add some diversity to a child’s learning. Print my copies here (free, of course!) and laminate them so they can be re-used over and again.

One way you can use these flashcards is by shuffling the deck and flipping the card to have students answer the problems on the cards as fast as they can. This helps students to develop the ability to rapidly recall their times tables, even when presented at random.

This is a great option because it can be done without much fuss or effort in just 5 to 10 minutes per day. Before long, your child will be a multiplication wiz!

Constructivist Activities

While rote learning of the times tables is important, don’t sleep on the importance of teaching students what it means to multiply two numbers. Students need to know that “four times five” means four groups of five things. To build this knowledge, give the learner a pile of objects such as marbles and give them a problem, then have them group objects – for example, for the problem “four times five”, the learner will need to make four groups of five marbles.
