Lesson Suggestions for these Worksheets
Times tables is a topic that is still taught by rote – as adults, most of us can instantly recount a phrase, such as “five times five equals…”, simply by means of our reflexive memories.
And while rote learning is a central and essential element of learning times tables, we should not start there.
Children need to know what it means to multiply groups of things.
To start this, we tend to ask students to physically group objects, in order to understand that “five times five” means, literally, five groups of five things.
Once children understand the base concept of multiplication, we can move onto using these rote learning worksheets, as well as practicing using multiplication flashcards. Have children complete the worksheets and flashcard sets for homework.
In each worksheet grouping, I’ve presented several versions, including a sequential multiplication activity, scattered multiplication within a number set, and multiplication sets with missing addends. Use each in order, going from easiest to most difficult activity sets. Finally, use the last worksheet in each group, which is a test of mastery.
Once children have mastered each multiplication set, remember to continually reinforce the times tables over the course of 18 months through spaced repetition – assign multiplication tasks randomly for homework, more so at the beginning, then once every 4-6 weeks, to help reinforce the knowledge in long-term memory.
