This collection of free part-part whole worksheets includes a range of fun activities and challenges to keep students engaged in their learning.
Part part whole is a great way to introduce addition. In kindergarten, we focus on addition up to 10. By Grade 1, we aim for addition up to 20. Most of these pieces are for Grade 1, or extensions for Kindergarten students who need upward differentiation.
All the worksheets are designed to be printed onto A4 paper. Make sure you select the “shrink to fit” option when printing to avoid any cut-offs on your print.

Common CoreΒ© Aligned Learning Outcomes
These worksheets partially or fully address the following Common CoreΒ© learning outcomes:
Kindergarten
K.OA.A.2: Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
Grade 1
1.OA.C.6: Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 β 4 = 13 β 3 β 1 = 10 β 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 β 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

Difficulty: π₯
A good touch counting version that gives students the freedom to create their own part-part-whole grid and associated addition sentence. If you have a Kindergarten student, I’d start with this one to see how they fare.

All these part-part-whole grids have one missing element that the student needs to fill-in. This one can help the student to demonstrate understanding of the concept of part-part-whole.

This version requires students to understand the grid and then convert it into an addition sentence for numbers under 20.

A good simple one, this would be a good Kinder extension or lower Grade 1 option.

Many teachers are big fans of cut-and-paste activities, but they’re challenging. A simpler approach could be to give students colored pencils so they can simply color-match the jigsaw piece and its slot on the board.

A twist on the previous cut-and-paste version that’s less messy, here we get students to draw a line from the puzzle to its missing jigsaw piece.

A nice easy part-part-whole challenge with the very fun and motivating activity of solving the riddle!

Word problems are increasingly important in modern math curricula and standardized tests. This version helps you to blend word problems with part-part-whole challenges.

This easier version of the word problem challenge involves pairing word problems with nearly complete part-part-whole grids. The task could be done without the word problem, but adding-in the word problem scaffolds understanding of math in real-life contexts.

A motivating maze challenge, here students are required to complete each grid before they can leave the chamber and head through the maze to the next chamber!
