Dividing Unit Fractions by Whole Numbers Worksheets

Zarah Designed by Chris

This collection of free worksheets walks students through tasks involving division of unit fractions (with numerator of 1) by whole numbers. The worksheets have been designed to satisfy the Common CoreΒ© Grade 5 Math standard 5.NF.B.7.

I’ve made these worksheets as a progression from easy to hard, and ensured they meet two specific requirements in the Common CoreΒ© standard: making visual representations (Worksheet 1) and reversing the division through multiplication (Worksheet 6), so be sure to grab all the worksheets to fully satisfy the learning outcome.

worksheets are designed to be printed onto A4 paper. Make sure you select the “shrink to fit” option when printing to avoid any cut-offs on your print.

Common CoreΒ© Learning Outcomes

These worksheets address the following Common CoreΒ© learning outcomes:

Grade 5 Math

5.NF.B.7 “Apply and extend previous understandings of division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.”

Difficulty: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

Visual representation is a good entry way into this topic, helping students to conceptualize division of fractions by whole numbers. This worksheet can also help to satisfy the Common CoreΒ© 5.NF.B.7 standard (Grade 5) to “use a visual fraction model to show the quotient” during division of a unit fraction by a non-zero whole number.

Version 2

Difficulty: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

This version introduces the method of multiplying the reciprocal by the whole number to reach the correct answer, with 12 scaffolded practice questions.

Version 3

Difficulty: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

This version extends the previous version. Use it for reinforcement, practice, or homework. I’ve also used it as a test at the end of the unit.

Version 4

Difficulty: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

This version is a gamified activity for students, where they need to color the correct of three possible answers presented below the question. Students are still expected to show their working.

Version 5

Difficulty: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

This next gamified version has students crack a code to solve the riddle “why are fish so smart?” Once a student has found the correct fraction, they correlate it with a letter on the code at the bottom of the page.

Version 6

Difficulty: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

This final version is quite hard, but necessary for meeting this Common CoreΒ© learning outcome. Students need to be able to “use the relationship between multiplication and division” to explain the reverse of their equation, returning them to the original fraction.
